The abstract reads: A review of the development of arithmetic from natural numbers, integers, and rational numbers to reals, complex numbers, and beyond. While initially such extensions of number systems are driven by our desire to obtain solutions to simple equations, once we reach complex numbers the motivation changes to retaining as many properties of arithmetic as possible.
