Chair of Mathematics Petr Vojtechovsky is leading a talk about the limits of arithmetic. The level of the talk will be suitable for a general audience curious about math.
The abstract reads: A review of the development of arithmetic from natural numbers, integers, and rational numbers to reals, complex numbers, and beyond. While initially such extensions of number systems are driven by our desire to obtain solutions to simple equations, once we reach complex numbers the motivation changes to retaining as many properties of arithmetic as possible. How far is "beyond"? Are such arithmetics useful? Come and see for yourself.
