In honor of the spirit of "Black Love," this interactive workshop will explore how to create your own loving community, especially when navigating a predominantly white institution (PWI). Drawing inspiration from the unique experiences of students from different states and beyond, we'll delve into strategies for building a supportive environment where you can thrive.
How did you find or create a community at your PWI? What groups and resources have been vital in your journey? In this session, you'll have the opportunity to share your experiences, collaborate with others, and identify key organizations, people, and friends at DU who support and inspire you. We'll also discuss how you've developed your "specialized degree toolbox" — the skills, support systems, and tools you've put together to navigate your academic and personal journey.
In addition, we’ll lead an uplifting workshop on "Black Self-Love" through journaling. Journaling can be a powerful tool for self-reflection, healing, and personal growth. We'll share various journaling techniques and discuss why this practice is so important for Black self-care. How does journaling support your well-being? What methods help you express your emotions and reflect on your experiences?
Participants will be guided with prompts and given time to journal, with the opportunity to explore new ways of connecting with themselves. To make the experience even more special, we’ll host a passive project where you can decorate your very own journal.
Enjoy good music, tasty snacks, and great company while engaging in meaningful conversation and learning new ways to care for yourself.
Come connect with others, share your story, and leave feeling empowered to create the community and self-care practices that will help you thrive at DU and beyond.
