In 1997, representatives of the University of Denver signed the Magna Charta Universitatum (The Great Charter of Universities) in Bologna, Italy, pledging to uphold and protect academic freedom and institutional autonomy as key principles essential to the operation of universities. The Charter was formally signed by 388 univresity leaders in 1988 to commemorate the 900th annivesary of the founding of the University of Bologna. Today, nearly 1000 universities from around the world have signed the Charter. As signatories, they commit to international cooperation in defense of the idea of the university as an open space dedicated to higher learning without interference. This exhibit showcases the partnership between the University of Denver and the University of Bologna that grew to include student and faculty exchanges, the DU-Bologna International Center for Civic Engagement, international conferences, and new opportunities for scholarship and public engagement.
