A Morning in the Tortured Poets Department with Stephanie Burt

Join us for donuts, coffee, and a free-flowing discussion of poetry, pop culture, and writing for a public audience with esteemed poet-critic Stephanie Burt. Stephanie Burt is a poet, literary critic, and professor with nine published books, including two critical books on poetry and three poetry collections. Her essay collection Close Calls with Nonsense was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. Her other works include Taylor’s Version: The Poetic and Musical Genius of Taylor Swift; We Are Mermaids; Advice from the Lights; The Poem is You: 60 Contemporary American Poems and How to Read Them; The Art of the Sonnet; Something Understood: Essays and Poetry for Helen Vendler; The Forms of Youth: Adolescence and 20th Century Poetry; Parallel Play: Poems; Randall Jarrell on W. H. Auden; and Randall Jarrell and His Age. Her writing has appeared in the New York Times Book Review, the London Review of Books, the Times Literary Supplement, The Believer, and the Boston Review.

The University of Denver is committed to a culture of robust debate, open dialogue, and facilitation of free expression on its campus. When speech or other forms of creative expression are disrupted, an unacceptable denial of freedom may result. Acts of protest or disagreement with a speaker on the University campus may not unduly interfere with communication between the speaker and the audience. If parties cause a disruption that unduly interferes with those communications, the Event Organizer will notify the parties that such interference is unacceptable. If the parties continue to unduly interfere with those communications, Campus Safety will use measures to stop the interference, which may include physical removal of the responsible parties from the area. This prohibition against undue interference does not include suppression of the usual range of reactions commonly displayed by an audience during a robust discussion of controversial ideas.
