Indigenous Gastronomy: Our Connection to Family, Tradition, Place

The University of Denver Museum of Anthropology is pleased to partner with The Institute for Indigenous Resource Management to present this Indigenous Film & Arts Festival art exhibit. While external forces often seek to erase traditions, food is a powerful force that keeps identity and memory alive. As cultures interact and intertwine, new cuisines arise, founded in tradition while adapting to new environments, ingredients, and techniques. Creole cooking is perhaps the quintessential embodiment of the creation of a unique cuisine. We are pleased to present an exhibit by artist Jazz Holmes celebrating her Creole family's food traditions. In addition to the exhibit opening, Jazz Holmes will also host a cooking demonstration, "The Art of Black Creole Cuisine" on Wednesday Nov 4 from 6:30-8:30pm at Metro State University, School of Hospitality Room 208.
