4D Family Experience: Holistic Student Support from Campus to Home

Taylor Meneley + Brie Jutte + Amber Cardamone

Audience: staff, faculty

Track(s):

Data supports that the best collegiate student outcomes are directly tied to family engagement. Whether students are struggling or celebrating, it is typical that their first stop to share their news is their family support system. There is a need to redevelop the relationship and guidance a college-aged student receives from their family member once they enter early adulthood. However, it is equally needed for the institution to consider how they are providing access to knowledge for the family member to develop and support their young adult. Rather than closing a family support system out of the DU experience, why not develop a curated 4D family experience to wrap around DU students from campus to home?

This interactive workshop will provide opportunities for faculty to design for greater trust in their classrooms, departments/units, colleges, and in inindividual interactions with students and colleagues. Participants will come away with actionable strategies for setting the stage for trust to emerge in their work, therby not only enhancing and invigorating our students' 4D Experience but also gaining tools that can be applied across their personal and professional lives.

You are Part of a Student's Constellation: Turning Transactional Moments into Transformational Conversations

McKenzie Mohler + Michele Tyson, EdD + Allison Weihrauch + Allyson Mackender

Audience: staff, faculty

Track(s):

Every person who interacts with a student at the University of Denver is part of that student’s constellation of support. In this session, we will discuss research showing the importance of each person on campus contributing to a student's sense of belonging, while giving audience members the tools to turn a transactional moment into a transformative conversation by asking powerful questions. All attendees will leave feeling empowered to have difficult conversations with students, in all roles across campus.
