This session will demonstrate the internal workings of student support at DU. It will explain the integrated approach to managing student concerns and how situations may escalate to higher levels of support. It will also look behind the curtain demonstrating the complexities of gathering information to connect students to appropriate resources and activate appropriate protocols for each individual report that is received.

This session will discuss how we have incorporated a reflective conversation for student staff evaluations and the benefits of this process vs a traditional evaluation process. We will highlight themes we find in responses, and then turn over the conversation to students who will lead a panel discussion on their experience and value it brings to them.

Horizontal Mentorship: The Value of Peer Mentors in the Classroom

This session will discuss the recently concluded pilot program in which a 4D Peer Mentor was present in the FSEM classroom for the duration of the quarter. It will examine the importance of peer mentorship, horizontal leadership in the classroom, and collaboration between staff and faculty to better support the first-year transition. Participants will learn about how to create mutually beneficial relationships between faculty, staff, student staff, and first-year students. Participants will leave this session with a deeper understanding of how to incorporate mentorship and relationship building into the curriculum of First Year Seminars.
