Drawing in Dr. Burns' lived experience as an academic in long-term recovery from addiction and her research, this keynote explores the nuanced risks and rewards of disclosing a recovery identity in higher education. Inspired by the Recovery on Campus Alberta model, the presentation will also discuss strategies to co-create recovery-friendly campuses that support both students and employees, followed by time for audience questions.

Dr. Victoria F. Burns is the founder and director of the University of Calgary Recovery Community (UCRC) and Recovery on Campus Alberta (ROC), leading initiatives to reduce addiction stigma and create recovery-friendly campuses across the province of Alberta. She also leads the Recovering in Place Lab (RIPL), which explores community-based approaches to addiction recovery and recovery-oriented systems of care. A tenured university professor, licensed social worker, and international expert in recovery, she is also a person in long-term recovery from addiction and has secured major research grants, publishing extensively on addiction, recovery, and stigma. Recognized for her impact, she is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Award for her contributions to mental health and addiction. Passionate about fostering inclusive, recovery-friendly environments, Victoria lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, with her husband, Hervé, and their cat, Missy.

Two of their works are attached to each registration so be sure to take a look and ask them any questions that come up.
