Please join us on Wednesday, June 17th for a virtual conversation in commemoration of Juneteenth. This year’s discussion will center on the Juneteenth episode of Princeton University’s African American Studies (AAS) Podcast. The episode examines Juneteenth’s historical roots and its evolving significance as both a celebration of delayed emancipation and a reminder of the ongoing struggle for Black freedom. It traces the holiday’s grassroots origins, its spread through Black migration, and its eventual recognition as a federal holiday, while also noting the tension between this recognition and contemporary efforts to limit the teaching of race and slavery. By drawing connections between today’s political climate and the post‑Reconstruction era, the podcast underscores that freedom is never guaranteed and encourages us to view Juneteenth not only as a day of celebration, but as a call to continued learning, activism, and imaginative work toward justice.
