DU Story Mosaic Fall 2023 Event: Sharing Stories: Building Community

Be a part of the story: Story mosaic series (image shows a checkered colorful pattern)

We are excited to officially launch the ‘DU Story Mosaic: Sharing Stories, Building Community,’ a storytelling initiative at DU! The DU Story Mosaic is a cross-campus collaboration that recognizes the incredible power of storytelling. This initiative aims to bring together the entire DU Community to engage in a meaningful exchange of our unique stories. Our hope is that community members listen, learn from each other, and practice reflection to experience personal growth in the process. We also seek to inspire change within our organization through storytelling.  

Don't forget to RSVP to join us for our Fall Quarter launch event (details below). We are still looking for a few more storytellers and attendees!
 

Fall 2023 Event Details:

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 11, 2023 | 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm; Lunch will be provided, Attendees do not have to be present for all sessions

Location: Burwell Center for Career Achievement, Room 340

The Theme this year is: What has been your path to DU? What brought you to DU and what does DU mean to you? Any stories may be shared.

Storyteller Logistic Details: If you want to be a storyteller, we would be honored! You can share a story that is between 5 – 10 minutes each. Storytellers can share any story that they would like around the theme. During a test soft launch event this past August, members shared personal anecdotes about their lives leading up to DU, what led them to DU, how their experiences shape how they work with others at DU, and more!

C+V and the Newman Center team are partnering up for a special C+V Pop-Up Wellness Hour on October 4, 2023 from 12:00 – 1:30 pm MST! We invite you to join the Newman Center and C+V team members in the Newman Center lobby to engage in fun and meaningful conversation on how we can increase community here at DU and to learn about the Newman Center.

Free food and beverages will be available! Stop by to grab lunch and have some fun conversation with other community members!

Community Wellness Hours

Our weekly Beans Community Coffee Hours have been a great success, and we've loved the opportunity to engage with numerous DU community members. We invite you to partake in this delightful experience and enjoy a complimentary beverage while engaging in conversations with your fellow community members. Invite a colleague, classmate, peer, friend, or mentor to join you for a complimentary cup on us!

The Fall 2023 Wellness Hours are taking place every Thursday, from 9 am - 11 am through November 16th at Beans Coffee, located in the Joy Burns Center.

Lamont School of Music:
Indigenous People's Day Celebration


 
Please join us for an Indigenous Peoples' Day Celebration. Cheyenne and Arapaho musicians will visit Lamont and share a performance for Indigenous Peoples' Day 2023. There will be a drum performance of Chief White Antelope’s song, a traditional Cheyenne Kitfox Society song that he sang as militia descended on the Cheyenne and Arapaho encampment at Sand Creek. The singers will also discuss the historical context & other important Cheyenne music traditions.

Date: Tuesday, October 10, 2023
Time: Doors open at 6:30pm
Where: Newman Center for the Performing Arts, Gates Concert Hall, Free admission

Division of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Diversity Summit


Please join us for DU’s 23rd annual Summit! This year we will be thinking about the layered and multifaceted reality of working and persisting for justice. September 15-October 16 is Latin Heritage Month! This month is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the contributions of those who have ties to South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. DU wishes everyone a joyful and commemorative month!

October 9 | Indigenous Peoples' Day

On October 9, we commemorate Indigenous Peoples' Day, a day dedicated to honoring the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous communities across the world. This day provides an alternative perspective to Columbus Day, promoting awareness about the impact of colonization on Indigenous populations and advocating for their rights and recognition.

October 11 | Coming Out Day

October | LGBTQ+ History Month

Throughout October, we celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month, a time to honor and recognize the contributions, struggles, and achievements of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. This month serves as an opportunity to raise awareness about the history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement and to promote equality and acceptance for all.

LGBTQ+ History Month is an opportunity to recognize the work that has been done in dismantling injustice, to acknowledge the importance of embracing diversity, and actively work towards a more equitable and inclusive world for all. 

A lo largo de octubre celebramos el Mes de la Historia LGBTQ+, un momento para honrar y reconocer las contribuciones, luchas y logros de la comunidad de lesbianas, gays, bisexuales, transexuales y queer. Este mes sirve para fomentar la sensibilización sobre la historia del movimiento por los derechos LGBTQ+ y promover la igualdad y la aceptación para todos.

El Mes de la Historia LGBTQ+ es una oportunidad para reconocer el trabajo que se ha realizado en desmantelar la injusticia, para reconocer la importancia de abrazar la diversidad y trabajar activamente en la construcción de un mundo más equitativo e inclusivo para todos.

DU is home to multiple LGBTQ+ affinity groups, safe spaces, and campus events for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies. These include: 

  • Queer Student Alliance (QSA)
  • Queer Faculty Association (QFA)
  • Queer University Employees (QUE)
  • The Pride Lounge, located on the 3rd floor of the Community Commons
  • Rainbow Rendezvous, a bi-weekly casual gathering for LGBTQ+ identifying students to connect with one another, with food/meal vouchers provided.
  • Trans Lunch, on Fridays at Noon for all transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and questioning DU community members. Meal vouchers are available.  
  • And more!
