Based on his recent book, The Party's Interests Come First: The Life of Xi Zhongxun, Father of Xi Jinping, Joseph Torigian examines the political life of one of the Chinese Communist Party’s most consequential yet understudied leaders.

The talk explores how party discipline, ideology, and elite power struggles shaped governance in the People’s Republic of China across multiple eras. Torigian’s analysis offers critical insights into the institutional foundations of CCP politics and their relevance for understanding contemporary Chinese leadership.

The event is presented by the Center for China-U.S. Cooperation at the Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs and will be moderated by Dr. Suisheng Zhao, Professor and Director of the Center for China-US Cooperation at the Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs.
