How do we model a just energy transition? How might scenario modeling shape policy & planning discourse?

Building on the newly released report Charged for Change: The Case for Renewable Energy in Climate Action—a collaboration between the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Octopus Energy, and the Frederick S. Pardee Institute for International Futures (Pardee Institute)—this Lunch and Learn offers a behind-the-scenes look at the research that underpins the findings. The report uses the Pardee Institute’s International Futures (IFs) model to explore long-term global scenarios for advancing both climate action and human development.

In this session, we’ll unpack how the IFs model was adapted to analyze energy futures, including the data work, model design, and methodological decisions that expanded its capacity to assess renewable energy transitions and their impacts on climate, economic growth, and human development. We’ll also examine how these insights are being applied, with UNDP and national partners drawing on the scenarios to inform policy dialogue and planning.

Attendees will hear from Dr. Chibulu Luo, Global Energy and Climate Change Advisor with UNDP; Dr. Jonathan Moyer, Director of the Pardee Institute; Deva Sahadevan, Senior Research Associate and lead author of the report; and Mohammod Irfan, Senior Scientist at the Pardee Institute. Next, Dr. Geoffrey Omedo, a technical specialist with UNDP Nigeria, will showcase how this research is being applied in Nigeria, focusing on ground realities and strategies to improve energy and development outcomes. After presentations, we'll open the floor to audience Q&A, creating space for technical questions about the modeling, discussion of country-level use cases, and conversation about how similar approaches might support other contexts.

This event is ideal for students, researchers, faculty, and practitioners who want to go deeper into the methods and applied policy work behind Charged for Change. Bring your questions and be ready for a working conversation.
