This interactive workshop explores effective approaches to addressing harmful behaviors and creating a more inclusive community through the practices of "calling in" and "calling out." Designed for students, staff, and faculty, participants will develop practical skills for promoting accountability and growth while maintaining respectful relationships.

Workshop Overview

In today's academic environment, knowing how to address harmful behaviors effectively is essential for fostering a culture of inclusion and respect. This workshop introduces participants to two complementary approaches: "calling out" (publicly addressing harmful behavior) and "calling in" (engaging in private, compassionate dialogue to promote understanding and change).
Learning Objectives

Understand the differences between calling in and calling out approaches and when each might be appropriate.
Develop practical skills for having difficult conversations about harmful behaviors.
Learn techniques for responding to being called in/out with openness and growth mindset.
Practice scenario-based exercises applying both approaches in academic settings
Create personal action plans for effective allyship in various campus contexts.

Expected Outcomes

Participants will leave with:

A toolkit of practical phrases and approaches for different situations.
Greater confidence in addressing harmful behaviors constructively.
Strategies for creating accountability while preserving dignity.
A personal action plan for implementing these approaches.
Resources for continued learning and practice.

Join us in building a more inclusive campus community through thoughtful, effective communication strategies that promote growth and understanding.

This session will be facilitated by Dr. Betty Snyder, DU's Ombuds, in partnership with HRIC's office of Talent Acquisition & Development.
