Club Sports teams bring together groups of students with similar interests to organize and participate in a specific sport and/or recreational sporting activity. We are a dynamic organization on the DU campus, committed to developing students as active members of the University community.

We have more than 25 active sport clubs that compete in local, regional and intercollegiate competitions. Whether you have been playing a sport for years or want to try something new, we encourage you to join a team and stay active throughout your time at DU!

Frequently Asked Questions

A Club Sport is a group of individuals brought together by similar interests in order to organize, participate and compete or perform in a specific sport. Each Club Sport has a leadership structure within its club and is led by at least two club officers. Club Sports, while unique and separate entities, are responsible for following policies and guidelines set forth by the Club Sports Manual and the Division of Athletics & Recreation.

While it is not required of all clubs, many have coaches to facilitate practices and coach at competitions. Our clubs compete against clubs from other universities and against local, regional, and national competition, but are not affiliated with the NCAA. The strength of Club Sports depends greatly on the degree of dedication of the student officers and club members. Members can expect to learn leadership and organizational skills through their participation.

Club Sports participation is open to all University of Denver students (undergraduate and graduate), as well as full-time faculty & staff. Eligibility for competition may have separate guidelines, as determined by each club's governing body. Faculty/staff are typically not eligible for competition, and most governing bodies have a credit hour requirement for each academic term.

All clubs collect team dues, but the amount varies for each club. Dues typically cover the costs for uniforms, other apparel, equipment, coaching and travel.

Contact the officers for the club you are interested in joining to find out information on tryouts and/or a team's next practice. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early to your first practice to complete the appropriate paperwork to participate in tryouts/practice.

Some clubs host tryouts due to limited space and equipment, or to establish a competition/travel roster. Please email the club officers to find out more information about tryouts.

Practice requirements vary by club. Most clubs practice two or three times a week for about one or two hours per practice. Frequency of practices and days/times of each practice are determined based on facility availability and if the club is in competition season.

Clubs are supported by the Division of Athletics & Recreation, which receives funding from the Undergraduate Student Government (USG). The Club Sports Executive Council, consisting of officers from various Club Sports teams, determines funding for each club through budget proposals and allocation presentations.

Clubs are eligible to apply for additional funding through Club Sports to cover various risk management initiatives. Clubs are required to collect team dues and fundraise throughout conventional methods or soliciting for donations.
