The Pulse: Weekly News & Happenings at DU

The idea of taking a stand can call up images of powerful and decisive moments, moments when we commit ourselves to action or give voice to an important value or belief. Taking a stand can happen in quieter, less visible ways, too, such as when we speak out about small moments of disrespect or incivility. What leads us to the moments when we decide to take a stand?

The Short List: Don't Miss These Opportunities

Seniors:

Your final year at the University of Denver has brought many challenges. Back in September, the job market appeared to be robust. Since then, the landscape has been utterly transformed. You finished your classes online, were separated from friends and missed out on many of our spring traditions. While I know you will thrive and be stronger as a result of this crisis, no doubt you’re wondering what to do next.

As you evaluate your options, we hope you’ll consider continuing on at DU. To help you make that decision, we have announced a new 2020 Crimson Scholarship, which guarantees a scholarship of at least 33 percent of tuition costs should you decide to enroll in an eligible master’s degree program at DU for the fall 2020 quarter. We also are waiving application fees and all standardized testing requirements.

Changes to Student Employment

In the coming months, Student Employment will transition from the Office of Financial Aid to Career and Professional Development. An investment into the University’s strategic direction to enrich the student employment experience, this new office will provide opportunities for enhanced training and support for both students and supervisors. A small part of these initiatives includes a single platform for supervisors and students to connect for all position types.

Through the month of May, we will work with all faculty and staff employers to post their available student jobs in Pioneer Careers instead of the current student employment job board. Because there will be this one month overlap between the old system and the new, please make sure to check both systems for opportunities. As of June 1st, all student employment positions will be housed ONLY in Pioneer Careers.

As we build an enhanced Student Employment office, we hope to positively impact the student experience and that is where we need your input. In order to help us build the most robust tools and support programs for your professional development, we ask that you please take 5 minutes to fill out this survey by June 12th. We look forward to incorporating your input

Pride Flag at DU

Pride Flag Flies at DU

For the first time ever,  the Pride Flag has flown on our DU Campus officially in recognition of the LGBTIQ+ civil rights.   Pride Month, which recognizes the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, recognizes all of the diverse identities on our campus.  The Chancellor, Interim Provost and members of the LGBTIQ+ community were present to celebrate the raising of the Pride Flag.

Five Tips for Self Reflection

Remote Work Tip of the Week:
SELF-REFLECT

By definition, self-reflection involves deliberate thinking about your own behavior and beliefs. When you engage in this deliberate kind of thinking, you will develop awareness of your mental and emotional states and awareness of your actions. Developing this awareness is the basis for personal growth.

Top Four Questions for Self-Reflection

  1. What are my values?
  2. In what ways do my words and actions reflect or fail to reflect my values?
  3. How am I caring for myself so that I am mentally and physically at my best, and living out my values?
  4. What have I learned about myself and values today (this week, this month, this year)?
