2022 DU Hero Games Sunday, October 9th (8:30am - 1:30pm) | Diane Wendt Soccer Field - University of Denver
My name is Jason Tipler. I am the president of the Student Veteran Association and the director of the DU Hero Games here at the University of Denver. I am writing to you today to see if you would like to bring your food truck out for the competitors and family members for the 2022 Hero Games. The 2022 DU Hero Games is about honoring our fallen service members by enrolling sixteen, 4-person teams, to compete in four military-oriented exercises designed to reflect our diverse military experiences. With the funds raised from this event, the Student Veterans Association will provide personal and professional development programs, community engagement, and support the overall well-being of DU’s student veteran population and military affiliated community. These programs will include workshops to learn effective communication, leadership training, and how to be successful in civilian life. This annual event will be held on 09 October 2022 at the University of Denver. More info
2022 Livingston Lecture - Warfare from Cave Walls to Instagram: How Authoritarian States and Extremists Weaponize Visuals
Thursday, October 20 (5:30 PM-7:00 PM) | Lindsay Auditorium, Sturm Hall 281
Although visuals have been part of political messaging for thousands of years, their use now is ever more crucial to identity-building, persuasion, and manipulation thanks to a networked society that is cluttered by trillions of videos, photographs, and infographics. With the competition over eyeballs intensifying in the digital environment, both nation states and extremist actors have developed their messaging strategies to effectively reach and mobilize transnational audiences. In this lecture, Kareem El Damanhoury, assistant professor in the Department of Media, Film & Journalism Studies, will trace the evolution of “propaganda” from ancient times to modern day Instagram feeds, highlight ISIS as an exemplar of extremist actors who have managed to build alternative, visually dominant media systems, and present China as a case study for authoritarian states expanding their targeted communication globally to promote their ideologies and undermine their rivals.
