September is National Recovery Month

Originally known as "National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month," National Recovery Month, celebrated in September, was established to raise awareness about substance use disorders and the transformative power of recovery. Over time, its focus expanded to include mental health awareness and broader forms of personal healing and growth. National Recovery Month is a time to honor the tenacious spirit of individuals triumphing over substance use disorders and mental health challenges. Through shared stories and collective support, we celebrate the journey of recovery and emphasize the importance of unity in fostering wellness. National Recovery Month stands as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the collective efforts to build a society where everyone can find the resources, understanding, and hope needed to overcome challenges and thrive in recovery.

Latin Heritage Month

Latin Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States as a way of recognizing the contributions of those who have ancestral ties to South and Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The span of the month coincides with the national independence days of multiple Latin American countries from European colonial rule. Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica all celebrate independence on September 15 with Mexico celebrating on September 16, Chile on September 18, and Belize on September 21. As well as commemorating these historic anniversaries, DU wants to celebrate all the vibrant and diverse ways members of our community with Latin heritage have impacted the university with their culture, language, and achievements. In addition, DU acknowledges the history of discrimination and unequal opportunity for students, faculty, and staff of Latin heritage that persists in our society today. In recognition of this fact, DU has several on-campus initiatives including the Latinx Student Alliance and the DU Latino Alumni Association (DULAA) scholarship, which is targeted at helping undergraduate students with Latinx heritage who may face increased cultural and financial barriers to college. Starting at sundown on September 15, the two-day festival is the first of the Jewish High Holy Days and ends ten days later with Yom Kippur.
