Explore Australia and Tasmania During Summer Quarter
Aug 1 - Aug 15 | Tasmania and Queensland, Australia
As the "Empty Continent" or the "Land Down Under," Australia has long played an almost mythical role of remoteness and vast open spaces in the Western imagination. However, before this, Australia had been inhabited for thousands of years by Aboriginal communities, who have lived sustainably on the continent for at least 50,000 years. In this class, we explore the regions of Queensland and Tasmania and the diverse ways of life of Australians, both indigenous and settler, to examine the complexity of human-environment interactions on the continent. The class adopts a field-based case study approach to investigate some of these complex issues by visiting local sites and analyzing how contested histories influence sustainable resource use and landscape conservation.
