In our continuing effort to recognize and honor the diverse community at the University of Denver, this month we celebrate Black History Month. At the University of Denver, we commit and affirm the uncomplicated refrain “Black Lives Matter” even as others have questioned and rejected it. Anti-Black racism is real. This month we hope you will spend time learning more about the Black experience by attending and participating in the various events we are organizing to honor and celebrate Black History Month, including the Diversity Summit programming.
It's the midway point of the quarter, and hopefully you’ve had a chance to explore the newest nooks available on campus in the Community Commons. If you need an excuse to discover some new places and spaces, we’ve hidden rubber ducks around the Community Commons for you to find (you won’t need to climb on anything to find them, for the most part they’ll be easy to spot). Find a Duck and bring the attached postcard to the Community Commons Welcome Desk to exchange it for a prize! The added benefit of wandering around the space is that you may find some hidden-gem quiet spots that will be great for reading, writing, studying, or reflecting. Don’t let the cooler winter weather keep you in your room, get out and about and find yourself a favorite spot on campus or nearby (it doesn’t need to be in the Community Commons, it could be in your home).
20th Annual Diversity Summit: "We Rise to the Challenge Beyond Diversity"
Welcome to the fourth week of the Diversity Summit. This week we enter the half way point of the summit and will move from our engagements in historical framing and knowledge building to centering voices from specific communities. This week, we will feature a series of panels and discussions focusing in on the experiences of different racial groups. Each panel has been asked to engage a prompt with regard to their community’s histories and contemporary experiences (i.e., the Native American/Indigenous Community, the Black community, the Latinx community, the API community, and individuals who identify as multiracial). These are not caucuses, but rather center the lived experiences of these specific communities to bring to light both unique and intersectional knowledge. We call these our Community Conversations.
The University of Denver Best Buddies organization is looking for new leadership and membership! Please reach out to Lee Anne (leeannealsup@bestbuddies.org) for information on re-activating our DU Chapter.
What is Best Buddies?
Best Buddies is a non-profit organization with the mission of creating opportunities for one-to-one friendships and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Why Join Best Buddies?
By joining Best Buddies, you will become part of a growing movement of people with and without disabilities, dedicated to ensuring everyone has the opportunity to have a friend. You will be invited to group activities planned by the chapter leadership team. At least four group activities are held each year both in school and outside of school. Each chapter determines their own activities based on availability of the members. Most importantly, you will be “matched” in a one-to-one friendship!
What happens when I am “matched” in a Best Buddies Friendship?
You and your buddy will make a commitment to contact each other once a week by talking, though they will be encouraged to connect by phone, text, or email. Also, buddy pairs will make plans to get together twice a month. Many buddy pairs enjoy eating lunch together, going to assemblies together, or hanging out after class. The purpose of Best Buddies is to foster natural friendships between two people.
Who provides support for our Best Buddies Chapter?
Best Buddies program staff, a faculty advisor, and a special education advisor work together to provide the support and information needed to facilitate strong and lasting relationships and chapter.
