Spring 2021 - Week 1
Sex Assault Awareness Month Programs
Each year, the University of Denver recognizes Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) during the month of April by hosting a number of awareness and education events for the DU community. SAAM is a national campaign to raise awareness about consent and sexual assault. Join us this year as we host a series of events, both virtual and in person, including trauma-informed yoga, a healthy sexual communication workshop, and ongoing education for staff, faculty, and graduate students. We will also recognize Denim Day – an international day to draw attention to sexual violence and show support for survivors. Follow @ThriveatDU on instagram and facebook to stay up to day. Undergraduate students can register for events on Crimson Connect. Graduate students, please email hcc.thrive@du.edu if you are interested in attending!
Undergraduate Student Government Election Info Sessions
Undergraduate Student Government Elections are right around the corner. In order to run for an elected position all interested candidates must attend one of the 30-min virtual information sessions taking place throughout the next several weeks:
For those that choose to drink, the transition to turning 21 often includes new challenges such as drinking for the first time, drinking in new and unfamiliar environments, and being faced with pressure to consume more than they may have in the past. By teaming up with local businesses, Health Promotion has created a free 21st Birthday coupon book and informational session designed to provide students with a toolkit for a safer and more enjoyable celebration!
Free coupon books include free or reduced-price deals from local businesses to use on the week of your 21st birthday. The coupons will be given to each student, along with a brief educational session (10 minutes) about alcohol and cannabis with a Thrive Peer Educator, when they register to pick up their coupon book within a week of turning 21. Students must come themselves on or before their birthday, since coupon books are valid starting on your birthday for one week. If your birthday in 2021 has already passed, you can still participate in this program before June 2021.
If you’re a current DU student who is turning 21 soon and would like to participate in this program, sign up today! Registration is required to participate, we cannot accept drop-ins. More information about community partners, COVID-19 protocols, and coupon conditions can be found at www.du.edu/thrive or by emailing hcc.thrive@du.edu.
Pandemic Reflections: Struggle, Adapt, Overcome
In the year since COVID-19 shut down the United States, businesses have closed their doors, students and teachers have created virtual classrooms, employees created home offices, and friends and families were separated for months. While the virus spread rapidly across the country, another crisis was growing alongside it: a mental health crisis. A special episode of the RadioEd podcast explores the ways we’ve struggled, adapted and overcome — whether through adopting crucial telehealth technology, leaning on our four-legged friends or turning to the arts as an outlet.

'Give Kindness, Take Kindness' : A Semblance of Normalcy
The 'Give Kindness, Take Kindness' wall was initiated by Maggie Tisher, Zainab Alikhan, Shujan Sharafeldeen and Adewe Stovall as a PLP project. The purpose of this wall is to bring back 'random acts of kindness' in the midst of the pandemic. It will give DU students the opportunity to 'take what they need' and 'give what they can' in the form of quotes/motivational words on Post-it notes. The wall is located on the Driscoll Bridge for all students to participate in. We will also be including HCC resources on the wall. We hope to reduce the stigma around reaching out for help while simultaneously humanizing the counselors/staff available.
