Your Guide to Staying Safe & Respectful this Halloween!
Fall is Here!
We love this time of year! In addition to Halloween, we invite you to learn about some of the many celebrations and festivals happening around the world and on campus during this time! Read about these observances via the links below, and check out CrimsonConnect for upcoming events.
Plan ahead. Set a drink limit beforehand, and make sure you have a safe way home (e.g. DD, Uber, RTD).
Stick together. Stay with the same group of friends the whole time. Keep track of each other if you separate.
Eat (more than candy!) and stay hydrated before and while drinking. Take breaks (1 drink per 1-2 hours).
If using substances, use caution, and always test powder, pills, and liquid substances for fentanyl before using and sharing.
For free resources including Narcan, drug testing kits, and safe sex supplies, contact Health & Well-being Promotion at hwp@du.edu or submit a supply request form.
Don’t mix alcohol and other drugs, as combinations can be dangerous.
Find a “Trick or Treat Yourself” station on campus on Wednesday, October 28th from 11am-2pm to pick up harm reduction supplies from HWP.
Celebrate with Consent
Someone’s costume does not indicate their consent. Remember “the way they dress, does not mean yes.”
Consent is affirmative, meaning you ask directly and wait until you receive a clear and uncoerced 'yes' before engaging in any sexual activity.
Never forget that someone cannot consent to sex if they are, voluntarily or involuntarily, under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
It is never the fault of the survivor/victim if someone experiences harm, no matter what they are wearing, drinking, where they are or who they are with.
There are resources available on campus if you or someone you know has been directly or indirectly impacted by interpersonal violence. Contact CAPE at cape@du.edu for confidential support and advocacy.
Celebrate Respectfully
Be thoughtful when choosing costumes, decorations, and party themes.
Stay informed. Making light of historical or current events can undermine our sense of community and social responsibility.
Ask yourself: "Would I want my friends, family, or a current/future employer to see my costume or behavior on social media?"
Avoid costumes that appropriate or reduce social identities, cultures, and lived experiences to jokes, caricatures, or stereotypes.
Look out for each other. That means being aware of our environments and situations, interrupting harmful jokes, attitudes, and behaviors before they escalate, and calling for help when needed.
In an Emergency
In a crisis or emergency situation, call 911 and Campus Safety at 303-871-3000, available 24/7.
Report any harm to Civil Rights & Equal Opportunity at creo@du.edu.
If you are concerned about reporting due to intake of a substance, you will not be penalized under medical amnesty. Contact cape@du.edu more info.
We wish you a safe, respectful, happy Halloween!
Who Should Headline Musicfest? You Decide!
Musicfest is coming, and we want to hear from you. Vote for the artist you'd like to see perform and help shape one of DU's biggest campus events of the year.
Have you ever made such a big “mistake”, you thought you’d never recover? But someone gave you the grace to grow, try again, and do better? This Story Mosaic centers experiences of being granted “second chances” in our personal and professional lives that propel us toward who we are becoming. We invite students, staff, faculty, and alum to share and listen to powerful stories of redemption and transformation. Light refreshments will be provided.
The SAB is made up of Faculty, Staff, and Student representatives who resolve elevated cases where Students may have violated Community Standards or University Policies. SAB members determine whether or not the Student is responsible for violating these standards or policies and, if they are found responsible, the status and educational Outcomes that will be assigned. SAB members can assign any status outcome: Written Warning, Student Conduct Probation, Elevated probation, Suspension, or Expulsion. Training will be provided. Please consider joining this important board. To refer yourself, a colleague, or a Student, please complete the SAB Nomination form. The next SAB training is scheduled for Friday, November 6, from 1-3 pm via Zoom.
Please send any questions to SRR@du.edu or call 303-871-5724. For more information on the SAB and eligibility to participate, please see the Honor Code, beginning on page 50.
