What is your role as an advisor?

As an advisor, you are agreeing to actively support the students as they engage as an organization, which may come with it providing direct guidance, using your positionality and experience as a DU staff/faculty member.  If you are an advisor or are considering becoming a student org advisor, please refer to the Advisor Agreement to familiarize yourself with what is expected of you. Key responsibilities are summarized to the right. While advisors are not expected to be at all student organization meetings and events, we strongly suggest regular engagement with the membership, as well as assisting with transitions and keeping leadership organized.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular contact and involvement with the student organization officers
  • Help the group uphold University of Denver’s policies and guidelines
  • Remain familiar and involved with the activities and events of the group
  • Assisting with the administration of the financial affairs of the group
  • Serve as a “Campus Security Authority (CSA)” as it relates to compliance with the Clery Act and Clery Crime Reporting

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the organization I advise have to re-register every year?

Yes, Re-registration takes place annually during the Spring during May and June for the following academic year. Executive leadership will all receive emails about this ahead of time, letting them know what steps to take on Crimson Connect.

I need to step away from my Advisor role; what does this mean for the students I advise?

They will need to find a replacement advisor. You can assist them in finding a suitable replacement that is an existing Staff/Faculty member of DU. Our office can also serve as a resource to make some potential connections should you have issues with this.

Does the student organization have funding for their events?

Registered Student Organizations that are funded and approved by Undergraduate Student Government (USG) are provided a base allocation of funds for their annual activities. That said, they may be able to receive additional funding for an event or initiative they would like to coordinate by submitting the "Supplemental Funding Request" through USG on Crimson Connect.

Students have come to me to share information related to Title IX, a breach of campus policy, or other violations noted in the Clery Act. What should I do?

Express support and let them know that you are mandatory reporter for such incidences and move forward with reporting the situation appropriately.

The students are sharing that they have conflict between members. What is my role in addressing this?

You can be there to support them as leaders, providing guidance and potentially mediating conversations that need to take place. If you are unsure of how to manage the issue, feel free to reach out to our office and we would be happy to help.
